in 2003 jamaica produced 3.84 mt (8.2% of western production) of alumina with total bauxite production totalling 13.44 mt compared to 13.1 mt in 2002.the country has an estimated reserve base of 2.500 mt of bauxite (2003).
in may 2005 alcoa world alumina and chemicals (awac) and the government of jamaica approved plans to expand the jamalco alumina refinery in clarendon, jamaica by 150,000 metric tons per year (mtpy) as the first phase of the overall 1.5 million mtpy capacity expansion. this first phase will cost approximately $77 million, with the commitment of another $25 million to finalize detailed engineering on the full project over the next three months.

in july 2004 century aluminum company and noranda, inc. were approved by a bankruptcy court as the successful bidders to jointly acquire the gramercy (la) alumina refinery and related jamaican bauxite mining assets from kaiser aluminum & chemical corporation for us $23 million. the gramercy refinery has the capacity to produce 1.25 million metric tons of alumina a year.
