mining in zimbabwe
zimbabwe’s mining industry is focussed on a diverse range of small to medium mining operations. the most important minerals produced by zimbabwe include gold, asbestos, chromite, coal and base metals. the mining industry contributes approximately 8% towards the country’s gdp.
due to the general small scale nature of mining activities in zimbabwe, there are an estimated 100 – 300 000 informal miners active throughout zimbabwe. the lower commodity prices have had a worse affect on these small operations and as a result several operations have closed down. 35 different metals and minerals are produced, with the formal mining industry employing some 57 000 people although there have been significant job losses as a result of low commodity prices.
in september 2004 the zimbabwean chamber of mines reported that the overvalued exchange rate in the country continues to be the major cause for concern for the mining sector. despite the impressive prices for mineral commodities ruling on the international markets, the hard currency earned when converted to z$ is does not provide sufficient cover over costs to instil confidence going forward. mineral producers are battling to contain costs given the continued increase in the prices of inputs. though inflation has been on a downward trend, a positive economic attribute, the rate (314.4% for august) is still very high and prices of inputs are still rising impacting negatively on the cost base. recent increases in the cost of fuel will put pressure on suppliers to increase prices of their products over the next few months.
the chamber stated that coal (5.17%), cobalt (80.16%), gold (61.43%), graphite (38%), iron pyrite (3.98%), lithium (110%), nickel (53.27%), palladium (5.4%) and platinum (5.21%) had recorded increase in volumes produced in 2004 (up until september) compared to that recorded for the same period last year.

persistent financial and operational problems have led to the collapse of mhangura copper mines, another zmdc company. mhangura, which is facing depleted ore reserves and rising costs has signed an agreement with the drc’s gecamines to provide mhangura with 2500 t of copper concentrate per month. this deal has apparantly fallen through and mhangura is currently relying on production from the local renco and muriel mines as well as concentrates supplied from south africa. copper production has been declining in recent years because of the depletion of known reserves and low exploration expenditure levels in copper. enormous exploration potential remains.
